I had a kind of communist ideology from a time when I was thinking about servants working in the house and the way they are treated in Indian society. I always felt that servants are not given equal status. When I came abroad, I had to do all the work myself, and only then did I understand how much I miss having servants working at home. Abroad, where you have to do everything yourself, you also understand the importance of treating servants equally. You have to respect their time and labour. But in India, you can easily tell servants, “Go and make tea,” even if their time is over.
I always felt that people in India do not consider servants as human beings. When I went to India, I felt the same at home and other places. In the beginning, when someone said that he will keep the things, I thought that no, I will do it myself. But as the days passed, and when I started getting tea in my hands and the servants started carrying the plates, the communist thinking inside me started to fade away.
In a few days, I got used to that royal comfort. Now I don’t even bring water myself, I just call from the room and I get water or tea in my hands. It started to feel like I was in heaven, and I completely forgot that I have to go back and do all my work myself again.
One day I had to go out, and when I went out, I saw that the car had become very dirty. Usually a servant used to come to clean the car every day, but that day he had not cleaned it. I told mummy, and she said that she would talk to him. I got ready to go out, and just then the aunty who works in the house gave me tea. At that very moment the doorbell rang and in a hurry the cup of tea fell from my hand. Tea fell on the clothes and I got very angry. In anger, I scolded aunty and said, “What have you done?” Whereas it was my mistake.
When I opened the door, I saw an old man standing outside. He said, “Bhaiya, I wash Babuji’s car every day. I have to go to the village, I have some urgent work, so ask Babuji to give me some money.” My anger increased even more. I said, “Oh, but you don’t clean the car properly. Come out and see!” I did not listen to any of his explanations and angrily refused to give him money. He left very sadly.
When Mummy came to know after a while, she said, “I did not expect this from you. There is someone sick in his house, you should have given him money. He was only asking for 200 rupees. What about the car, it must have become dirty due to dust. It would have been cleaned yesterday. You don’t know what need he might be feeling. Son, everyone here is not a servant, but a member of the family. They consider us their family, so they never refuse.”
I was feeling very embarrassed now. Truly, the closeness and intimacy that we have here was perhaps missing abroad. That old man did not come for many days, and I kept waiting for him to come every day so that I could apologize to him. But he did not come. When I was coming back, I told mummy, “Give him the money on my behalf and say sorry.”
