Corporate Adhayatam
This story dates back to 2006, when I was working at a software consultancy. Early in my career, I was sent for a training session held at a different office within the company. People from various projects had gathered there, making it a great opportunity to meet and learn from others. At that time, I was the least experienced in the group and was struggling with work pressure and challenges with my manager.
During the training, we were divided into groups, and I got to know the people at my table. That’s when I met Vikas, a man with 15 years of experience. His calm and composed demeanor instantly impressed me. I couldn’t help but wonder how he managed to stay with the same company for so many years. During lunch, I asked him, “Have you never thought of switching jobs?”
Vikas chuckled and replied, “It’s not that I haven’t thought about it, but things have been going pretty well here.” Still curious, I pressed further, “Your colleagues are going abroad for onsite projects. Haven’t you ever considered that?” He smiled and said, “Let me tell you a story.”
He shared an anecdote with me: Once, during a Diwali fair at the headquarters, there was a stall set up by an astrologer, and it had the longest line. When he asked around, people told him that the astrologer was giving everyone the same advice: “Don’t worry, everything will be fine soon, your life is about to change.”
At first, Vikas thought there was no point in visiting the stall, but eventually, curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to ask. When he reached the astrologer, he asked, “Guruji, why are you giving the same answer to everyone?” The astrologer smiled and said, “It’s a simple answer. I’ve learned from experience that everyone’s worries may differ, but the essence is the same. Here, let me show you some questions.”
He showed Vikas a piece of paper with a list of questions:
I’ve only recently joined the company, and my manager is a perfectionist. There’s so much pressure. When will my project change?
My project and manager are fine, but why haven’t I gotten an onsite opportunity?
I went onsite once, but my visa wasn’t extended. When can I go again?
I was in the U.S., but my green card wasn’t approved. When will it come through?
There’s a recession and job cuts. Will my job be safe?
Looking at these questions, Vikas realized that while everyone’s concerns were different, the underlying anxiety was the same. The answer, too, remained constant: be patient, and with time, everything will fall into place. Enjoy every moment of life, whether with family or friends, because opportunities will come and go.
At the time, I didn’t fully grasp the depth of what Vikas was sharing, but years later, I’ve come to understand the wisdom in his words. True happiness lies in patience and the ability to appreciate the journey, not just the destination.
