The train reservation was confirmed, but as per my habit I checked my name in the list on the door. There is usually less crowd in AC second class, but it was holiday time, so there was a little more crowd. I had only one hand bag, so I did not face much trouble. I moved forward looking for my seat and saw that a boy was sitting on my seat. I kept my bag and told him that my seat is number 21, which one is yours? He showed me the seat above by gesturing.

Traveling also has its own thrill and when you are going to your home town then it is a different matter altogether, but I was far away from all these things and was not able to know the purpose of my journey.

After Mummy-Papa left, there was no purpose of going to India again to Allahabad, nor was it necessary.

One India trip of my office was planned to go to Hyderabad, then an invitation to a relative’s wedding came, so I thought, I should go to Allahabad on this pretext. Actually I did not feel like going to the wedding, but I felt that since I am going after so many years, I might as well take this opportunity.

Now even the thought of going to Allahabad created a strange thrill in my body.

All the passengers were looking at their families with great enthusiasm and the boy sitting near my seat was reminding me of my old days. From his phone conversations with his friends, I came to know that he works in TCS and lives in Gurgaon.

His words were taking me to my past and I felt as if I was going home in a 15-year-old train. It is holidays, I am happy to meet my family and at the same time I am sad about not being able to go abroad for the project.

I don’t know why I felt like talking to him, so I asked him where he lived in Allahabad. He told me that he lived in Kalyani Devi. I felt a little strange as soon as I heard the name of my locality.

Suddenly he asked, “Did you live in Kalyani Devi?” I nodded yes. He said, “You didn’t recognize me, I used to live in your neighborhood.” But I couldn’t remember him at all.

I said, “It’s been a long time.” My father was a development officer in LIC and he had a very large social circle. Our house was often crowded with guests. Papa’s colleagues in LIC were all uncles to us, but now it had become difficult to recognize all those children.

The train was moving at its speed, and his words brought back a series of old memories. I had seen him many years ago, and listening to him, one memory after another was being refreshed.

Early in the morning, the train reached Allahabad station. I was stepping on this station after many years, but the name of the city had now become Prayagraj. I felt like leaving quietly, without connecting with any old memories. When I got out of the train, I saw that boy and his father were standing outside the station. Uncle hugged me affectionately and said, “Akhil, how are you?” I smiled and replied, “I am fine, Uncle, how are you?”

When I called for a rickshaw after the conversation, Uncle put my luggage in his car without saying anything to me and said, “Let’s go home.” I said, “Just drop me near Civil Lines,” but Uncle insisted on having tea. His house was near my old house, and going there brought back a lot of old memories.

It felt strange to come as a guest to my own neighborhood. The streets where I spent my childhood, today seemed deserted and unfamiliar. Uncle’s house was very beautiful, but my old house was visible from his windows and I could see countless childhood memories in it. Uncle kept talking, but my attention kept wandering somewhere in those streets of the past.

Many children of the neighbourhood had gone away from the city to work in big companies. Parents are happy that their children are out and are progressing but the streets of the city are getting old and are waiting for their children to come back.

I came back without attending that wedding. The purpose of going there was fulfilled.
