“How are you Amit bhai?” After many years I was standing in front of my old friend Amit’s shop. Amit was so engrossed in his work that he didn’t even look at me. I was standing there for a long time, but as soon as he heard my voice, he left everything and came out. We were friends since childhood, when we both studied in the same class in Saraswati Shishu Mandir. Amit’s father’s grocery shop was the most reputed shop in our locality, and in those days his business was growing rapidly.

My grandfather and Amit’s father had a deep friendship. Baba, who worked as the chief savings agent of the post office after retirement, always advised Amit’s father about investment, due to which his business grew. He had set up this shop with struggle and educated his brothers. Gradually his business expanded so much that all the brothers had their own shops. Amit’s uncle had also studied, but eventually he also started managing the shop.

Amit was good in studies, but gradually he started thinking that he will have to take care of the shop, and he started losing interest in studies. I was always impressed by his confidence, where I and others were busy in the race of marks, he had no worries about his future. After 12th, our paths separated.

Like my brothers, I went to study engineering and then went out of Allahabad for a job. Whenever I came home, I would meet Amit. In the last year of college, I came to know that Amit was also married. A year later, when I went to his shop, he put his child in my lap. We were of the same age, but the path of struggle was long for me. By the time I got married, his child was 6-7 years old.

When I came to Allahabad after many years, I thought of meeting Amit too. Seeing him after so many years, old memories were refreshed.

“How are you, Akhil bhai, you have come to Allahabad after a long time?” he asked.

“Yes friend, now my parents are no more, so we visit each other less. How is your father, and how is the shop going?” I replied.

I felt strange listening to Amit’s words. He told me that his son is now pursuing engineering from Noida. He said, “Enough of shopkeeping now. I spent my life here with my family and father, but I want to make my son an engineer like you guys. Looking at you, I always felt that I should have done something similar. I had my own compulsions, but my son will not have to handle this shop.”

His words were unexpected for me. Looking at his shop and the life he spent with his family, I always used to think how comfortable and happy his life is.

Today it felt like both of us are considering each other’s life better. I want the stability that he has, and he wants the freedom that I have. Perhaps, both of us are looking for something in each other’s life that we don’t have.

Today I felt that we should explain to each other that we like each other’s lives, but both the paths are not easy. I am there in search of what you have, and you are here in search of what I have.
